Hiya CSA’ers –
Here is the semi-famous “what (on earth) is in the box” update for main season week 2! This is a sorta transition week in that some of the holdover green season produce raised in the greenhouse is done and gone. The new crop plants divide into warm season produce (not ready yet) and transplanted ‘cool’ season crops.
The very earliest Broccoli and Cauliflower, for example, are getting some size on them. There will be a relatively small portion this week as they start up. Cabbage is dribbling out – there are maybe 4-5 very small heads that have been slooooowly working their way to eating-size; but that will be it for maybe 2-3 weeks till the outside cabbage gets into gear. The thing that is always good is the full heads of outside lettuce. It is good, because at that point the local farmer gets to have some of the farm lettuce, which is a very good thing.
Crunchies are also going to be in short supply here for a few weeks. The carrots in the greenhouse have all gone away, and the new carrots are visible, which is about the best that can be said for them. There are two varieties; Mokum professes to be an ‘early’ carrot that can be harvested as a baby; which is not as satisfying as a two-fisted carrot that takes time and energy to chew down. Those are the ‘Sugarsnax 54’ which are coming as well, but slower. There will be new radishes in 3-4 weeks if the soil insects can be dealt with properly. So far the ugly bugs are feasting. Being organically inclined sometimes is, well, not the emotionally satisfying thing.
Asparagus is also winding down – it is important to let some of the plants get some size. The herbs are doing well, quite a bit of Oregano is available, as well as lots of chives. New green onions are about ready to set out. The Cucumbers died back and have been re-planted and have a couple of leaves showing; and there is a lot of chard. Green tomatoes are pretty small as yet, but they are coming.
Also – the engine on the ancient farm rear tine rototiller seized up. R.I.P… Maybe we should do a ‘you fund me’ for a tiller, eh? Nyah.
In the box week 2:
