This is an exciting week here at Shilofarm – the first week of the main season, when heat loving produce can be delivered. Real. Soon. Now. The sad fact of the matter is that the cool midsummer crops are still in your dreams. This first week is part of what is called the ‘cool’ session – the first four weeks of the main season. So – what does that mean? Transitions to outside crops are starting, there are still some ‘crunchies’ in the greenhouse squatting in the annoyed Tomatoes locations; snap peas and Asparagus are still available, and the strawberries are just barely changing color.
For those of you who have been in the green season much is as it was last week. The “on deck” list of things to expect Real Soon Now changes, and the “options” are pretty slim. There is a wide assortment of Lettuces; the heads are still modestly small and really good. The Red Iceberg is highly recommended – Here is the head that made it to dinner tonight (Is the lettuce as pretty as the rose?).
If you have a pretty picture of your meal or your veggies to share on FB, it is encouraging!
Remember: These veggies are picked about an hour before they are delivered. It only takes a few minutes for some greens to get all wilted (Chard, you know we are talking about you!), so rinse and chill. Rinse is a great way to not have something crawl on your plate at dinner, which most people find, er, repugnant.
And there are some green tomatoes that want to get ripe…
In the box week 1:
Greens | Lettuce (Red or Green), Pac Choi or Cabbage, Spinach, Red or Green Chard |
Crunchies | Snap peas, Carrots, a few beets possible – note that there will be a ‘hole’ in crunchies till new carrots and beets are here. |
Herbs | Arugula, Green Onions, Chives, Basil, Cilantro, Parsley, Oregano |
Other | Asparagus (getting to the end, not a lot this week) |
Next Week:
- Strawberries! The annual Farmer VS. Robin fight begins…
On Deck:
- Tomatoes (green for now, but coming)
- Baby Potatoes (nice big vines now…)
- Broccoli, some Cauliflower – 1-2 weeks till ready
Remember: If you have previously said things like “no chard” on you Poll, you probably won’t get any. Also, if you want to do something like “More lettuce, no cabbage” because you have a fridge full of cabbage – drop an email.
