Week 5 of the 2023 Green Season!

Spring – nyah, straight to summer!
This is a wonderful week to set out plants – lots of time on our knees with the zillion trays and more heading out. The weather is just amazing – and the plants are extremely please. The happiest thing is to see all the fruit blossoms – it was so upsetting last year to basically have no real fruit to set out. It is very very gratifying – especially when their are itty bitty Peaches already set!

Crisp. Sweet. Asparagus!

Last week almost everyone got the nominal 6 spears of Asparagus. It looks like this will continue for some time. Note that it is picked and then split up amongst boxes, with the Saturday farm call getting a set aside. The cabbage is also going to be a frequent resident of your boxes – probably for another 4 weeks or so. Spinach is getting leggy – being in a warm greenhouse does not fill it with joy.

you have not because you ask not. Rhubarb?

The Rhubarb here isn’t all that amazing, but there is some available. There isn’t enough to generally distribute it, so you will need to actually do a little bit of work and reply to this email or poke the FB group message with a request. Of course if nobody asks there are really good uses for it here.

The sudden onset of good weather seems to of actually caught most of the outside plants by surprise. The relatively cold April slowed down the outside lettuce, peas and beets. They will take some time to get their act together, but there will be crop. Obviously the mid-90’s forecast has possible bad effects too, but those should be surmountable. The harsh reality is that this week is mostly like last week – albeit with less choice of Lettuce.  It is worth mentioning that there is way too much Mustard – you are getting generous portions of that – if the generosity isn’t appreciated you really need to speak up!

It should be mentioned that Main season is coming right up. It appears that there is a fall-off of membership this year, which is okay but unfortunate because there really ought to be some great warm season crops!

Oh – and if any wants a free beaver… please come and catch one for yourself!

the list for this week:

Lettuce Mystery Lettuce week – there are a few of most everything. The fewest is the winter density, so.. what you see is what you get.
Brassicas Cabbage. There is lots of cabbage, and will be for some time to come. There is also some Kale, albeit it is pretty small plants. The Cauliflower is also small, but very earnest.
Roots  Beets are a lot happier with warmer weather, but they still only have their first leaf so it will be A Long Time (weeks).
Greens  Arugula, Wasabi mustard, Spinach. Again this week.
Herbs Chives, Mint,, Celery leaf, Parsley. Cilantro is growing. Thyme and Sage growing fast – need to be put in a constrained planter.
Misc  Asparagus Uber Alles (if that means all over everywhere for everyone). Rhubarb if you ask, and only if you ask.

And there are baby potatoes and peas – just not ready for a while.

In theory it is likely that a monthly update will be published. There was a drop-in inspection this week – the farm passed.
