Week 1 – Green Season commences – note that the email to the Green Season members already went out. In the event you did NOT get said email – then speak up quick because the farm accounts are messed up and the world will fall apart even more than it has already.
Now – Green Season itself is fraught with farming challenges. The two key issues are the dreaded April Freeze, apparently scheduled for tonight as per the weather guesser – and the transition from everything-in-the-greenhouse to almost-everything-outside. The first issue is in the hands of God – albeit covering sensitive plants (done) is good stewardship. The second issue is driven by two factors: starting enough seeds at the right time (done) and the rapid increase in daylight hours (on going). So – the vast beds of lettuce that are outside are supposedly going to kick into gear and be ready when the not-so-vast beds of lettuce in the greenhouse are harvested. The awkward time comes when the outside stuff lags and the inside stuff runs out.
And so – the greenhouse winter garden is winding down the Bok Choi – next planting of Bok Choi is started but not ready. This week, some of you get Bok Choi – if you crave Bok Choi, get your request in fast. Radishes have enough for a couple of weeks, Beets (especially fine greens) and carrots are in plentiful stock, and the big thing right now is Chard and herbs and giant lettuce. Anyhow – here is the
“What’s in the box” for this week:
Lettuce | one of four types – your choice and all good. Lots of Winter Density Romaine… |
Brassicas | a few small red cabbages or a large Bok Choi. Not enough this week for everyone. |
Roots | Radishes (longer roots), Beets with small bulbs. Young Carrots (Napoli) – just a couple. |
Greens | Mustard … Lots and lots and lots… If you already voted Mustard off your island you won’t get any… Chard Spinach. |
Herbs | Mint, Oregano, Chives, Arugula (lots – if you want lots ask), Green Onions. Some Garlic from 2021 if you want. Lots of Chives. |
Coming soon… Kale – growing fast. Cabbage – likewise growing fast. Snap Peas – not quite so fast, maybe 4 weeks. Asparagus! first three shoots were confiscated by the farm… Cilantro, Parsley, Garlic Scapes.
Coming not really soon – new potatoes. Grew some inside the greenhouse, and if they don’t freeze 4/6 it would be excellent. Outside potatoes are just breaking the ground.
Broccoli and Cauliflower get set out after 4/15, as well as new crop small bulb onions.
Here we go!
