2026 February Update

Hi All –

This is a very funny/odd time of the garden year. Every day, a newly discovered veggie from one or more of the seed vendors shows up in my email with a special offer – which I nominally ignore. The seed warehouse here has most of the common veggies, and it is not wise to trust any seed catalogue that has a new and amazing something or other.

grass growing like crazy!

What is happening regardless of seed catalogs is a very warm January. The grass and weeds are getting a jump on things, and the greenhouse is a happy place. There are quite a few fall planted transplants (in grow cells till recently) in the greenhouse, which will be ready (and in fact three small heads of lettuce gave everything for a taste test….) for the Winter season. Chives, radishes, Japanese Salad Turnips are all on the way, along with cabbage, bok choi, bunch onions (maybe), and of course lettuces.

The plan this year is to grow those crops that we here at the farm can put up as well as provide you who are members with enough to do the same. In 2025 a lack of equipment and other issues caused plant starts to be late – but the Tomatoes especially did well. We also had good green beans, but again they were late and got damaged.

The Green Season should be pretty rich. There goal is to have both snap and shell peas – we here at the farm will need several gallons of shell peas just for us – and I know that snap peas are a favorite for several of you. We are also adding a new to us Bean variety called a Romano – it is meant to be cooked or made into soup – thick, sweet pot, good nutrition and excellent taste.

The Romano – bean of the year!

Scheduling is that Winter season is starting Friday, February  19 and run for 6 weeks. Green Season then will run 8 weeks starting April 9, Main season is starts Friday, June 11.

Since we are intentionally keeping the membership low, there is a thought that we will do some farm stand sales in the September-November timeframe. The squash were a crushing disappointment in 2025 because of, well, it doesn’t matter because of it just was. There are some very interesting squash in the plans for this year, as well as a concerted effort to grow melons – Cantaloupe, Honeydew and Watermelon. So –

I’ll keep you posted as we go along. The big email list is dead – there was a request to op-in for these updates, and that was a bust… so to speak, other than you folks!
